For instructional purposes, the templates are identified as follows: the equilateral triangle is piece A, the cut off triangle is piece B, and the sixty degree diamond is piece C.
The key to this pattern is to alternate blocks, one with a light center and one with a dark center within each row. Highly contrasting fabrics are most effective.
For each light block:
For each dark block:
- Cut 1 piece A from light fabric
- Cut 3 piece B from dark fabric
- Cut 3 piece C from light fabric
- Cut 1 piece A from dark fabric
- Cut 3 piece B from light fabric
- Cut 3 piece C from dark fabric
Step-by-step Instructions:
There are several ways to finish off the sides of the quilt. One is to cut off the sides to make a straight edge. (gasp!) Another is to sew an extra piece of fabric onto the ends of each row, and then square it off. The other alternative is to leave the edge as is, for the scalloped effect is quite attractive.
- To every light A stitch a dark B. To every dark A stitch a light B.
- Take 1/2 of the dark B pieces that are left and sew a light C onto one end of each. Take 1/2 of the light B pieces that are left and sew a dark C onto one end of each.
- Sew each unit produced in step 2 onto a unit produced in step 1, taking care to keep the dark and light blocks straight.
- Sew a light C to both ends of the remaining dark B's and sew a dark C to both ends of the remaining light B's. Then sew these to the corresponding units from step 3, thus completing the blocks.
- Arrange the blocks into rows, alternating the light and dark centers as shown. No two pieces of the same color should touch. Sew each row together, and then join the rows together.
