How Many Nine Patch Units Are Needed?
To figure how many nine patch units you need, choose the desired matress
size, and add length and width equal to the desired drop on the bottom
and sides. This will be your target quilt size.
STANDARD MATTRESS MEASUREMENTS
| Twin |
39 x 75 inches |
| Ex Long Twin |
39 x 80 |
| Double (Full) |
54 x 75 |
| Queen |
60 x 80 |
| King |
72 x 84 |
Using the 9 1/2 size template set:
To find the width, the first unit is the whole 9 1/2 inches, then each one thereafter overlaps, so just add 6 3/4 inches for each additional unit. The length is figured in the same way.
(1 x 9 1/2) + (? x 6 3/4) = desired measurement
Using the 4 3/4 size template set:
To find the width, the first unit is the whole 4 3/4 inches, then each one thereafter overlaps, so just add 3 3/8 inches for each additional unit. The length is figured in the same way.
(1 x 4 3/4) + (? x 3 3/8) = desired measurement
Example
As an example, I wish to make a twin size quilt using the 9 1/2 templates set, with an eight inch drop on each side and the bottom. My target quilt size would be:
39+8+8=55 inches wide by
75+8=83 inches long.
Into the equation above, I would plug in numbers until I got close to my target measurement. I end up with:
(1 x 9 1/2)+(7 x 6 3/4)=56 3/4 inches wide using 8 nine-patch units, and
(1 x 9 1/2)+(11 x 6 3/4)=83 3/4 inches long using 12 nine-patch units.
The total number of units is 8x12=96.
