Piecing the Improved Nine Patch Block

Piecing Instructions Use the pen and ink drawing to plan out your design. You may need to cut off a portion, or xerox the drawing and add to it to make the design larger, depending on how large you wish to make your quilt, and on which size template set you use. We also have some instructions for planning.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Piece all the nine patch units.

  2. To each nine patch unit, using two melon shaped patches, add a melon piece to opposite sides. Each unit will look like a spool. It is helpful to fold the units and melons in half to find the centers, pin melon piece on top of nine patch piece, and sew.

  3. Piece each row by sewing together nine patch and melon units, alternating the orientation of the spool units.

  4. Sew rows together.

  5. Add melon pieces to outside edges of quilt as needed.
