Hint: Be sure to choose highly contrasting fabrics. One suggestion might be to choose a floral for the center and outside frame, and pick two contrasting colors from the floral for the two inner squares. For each Interlocked Squares Block, cut 1 octagon and 8 of the large truncated triangle from one fabric; cut a set of 4 triangles and 4 small truncated triangles from two different fabrics (referred to as fabric A and fabric B).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Your first seam will be a partial seam. Take a small truncated triangle from fabric A and lay it right sides together on one edge of the octagon. Press seam away from the octagon.
- Now take a small truncated triangle from fabric B and sew it to the next side of the octagon where the seam is complete. Continue attaching the remaining truncated triangles, alternating fabric A and fabric B.
- Now that all pieces have been sewn around the octagon, finish sewing the seam from step 1.
- Sew the four triangles from fabric B onto opposing sides of the octagon, making sure the fabric matches the fabric at the right as you sew it on.
- Sew each of the remaining triangles from fabric A between two large truncated triangle pieces.
- Add a unit from step 5 onto each side of the octagon unit, leaving 1/4-inch seam allowance open on both ends for mitering.
- Sew the last four corner seams, mitered, beginning at the inside and sewing towards the outside of the block.
