The Feathered Star offers a variety of options, not only in fabric selection, but you could choose a pieced center octagon (FAW-2 1/8) instead of the one piece octagon included in the set, or even put a pieced LeMoyne Star in the center (LSW-1 1/4). Using the window style Ardco templates, centering fabric motifs is made simple.
Mark the intersections of the 1/4" sewing lines (seam allowance) on each of the pieces if you are machine piecing or mark the entire sewing line if you are hand piecing.
It helps to lay your block out while you sew.
For each block cut:
octagon-1Step by step instructions:
large square-4
small square-8
large triangle-4
medium triangle-8
small triangle-48 light, 32 dark
diamond-8
kite-8
- Sew 4 of the medium triangles to the octagon to make it square.
- Sew 32 sets of light and dark small triangles together, then sew into 16 pairs.
- Make 4 of the units illustrated below, using a partial seam, using pairs from step 2, small light triangles, large triangles, and 4 of the small squares.
- To each of the units in step 3, sew on a kite. Sew the remaining 4 medium triangles to 4 of the kite sections, and sew these on to complete the unit.
- Using the diamonds and light small triangles, make 4 of each of the units shown. Complete the square unit as shown, by adding paired squares from step 2, remaining small squares, and large squares.
- Sew the units together in rows as shown, sewing the partial seams last.
