Fabric Requirements:

Note: I usually buy more than I think I need. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Also, I like to cut my borders and bindings on the lengthwise grain. You may wish to adjust the yardage for the border and binding if you cut on the crosswise grain.

2 yards basket fabric
4 ¼ yards background fabric
2 yards border
2 yards binding
3 1/2 yards backing
1 twin size cotton needlepunched batt

Construction:

  1. From background fabric, cut nine 12 1/2" squares with the grain along the edge of the squares. Using the template set, cut 45 small triangles with the grain along the long side of the triangle, cut nine large triangles with the grain along the short side of the triangle, and cut nine of the trapezoid shape and nine reversed of the trapezoid shape with the grain along the longest side.
  2. From the Basket fabric, cut 81 of the small triangles with the grain along the long side, and cut nine of the large triangles. If your fabric is directional, pay attention to how you cut these out!
  3. Begin piecing the bottom half of the basket as illustrated. Resist the urge to press until the whole bottom is pieced.
  4. Now you are ready to layer the basket bottom. The backing triangle and batt piece are intentionally cut larger to make it easier to quilt the basket bottom. From the background fabric cut five 15" squares. Cut these in half diagonally. (you will end up with one extra background triangle).
  5. From the batt, cut four 15" squares so that you are left with a large 72x75 piece for the body of the quilt. Do not leave a space between the squares or you won't have enough! Then cut the squares in half diagonally. Use one of the half square batt pieces as a guide to cut the ninth batt piece.
  6. Layer a batt piece, a background triangle right side up, and the basket bottom right side down.
  7. Sew across the long side of the triangle. Use a scant ¼ inch seam allowance. Turn and press.
  8. Quilt the basket bottom either by machine or by hand following the numbered arrows.
  9. Trim the excess batt and background.
  10. Make nine sections of 1/2" finished bias tape, each at least 19" long for the handles.
  11. Lay the basket bottom on top of a 12 1/2" background square. Mark where the basket handle should be and use the handle pattern as a guide to mark the placement of the handle. Be sure the handle extends below the top of the basket. Now sew the bias tape along the marked line, turning the raw edges under to finish. Piecing the Beany Basket Illustration
  12. Pin or baste the basket bottom to the handle background. Tack each side where the handle meets the basket bottom. Repeat these two steps for the rest of the basket blocks.
  13. Now you are ready to set the blocks together. From the background fabric, cut four 12 1/2" squares, with the grain line along the edge of the square. Then cut four 12 7/8" squares with the grain line diagonally through the squares, and cut these four squares in half diagonally. Then, cut one 13 1/4" triangle with the grain line along the edge of the square, and cut this square into four pieces along both diagonals.
  14. Piece the quilt in rows as shown.
  15. Measure horizontally through the center of your quilt and cut your top and bottom border to this measurement. I used a 4" wide border, although you can use whatever width pleases you. Sew the top and bottom border on. Measure vertically through the center of your quilt and cut your last two borders. Sew them on and you are ready to finish your quilt.
  16. Layer the backing, batt, and top.
  17. Tie or quilt as desired, bind, and enjoy your Beany Basket Quilt!
*If you just want to make a regular basket block then in Step 1 just cut five 12 7/8" squares and cut them in half. Mark and sew on the handle. Proceed through Step 3, then skip to Step 13.
