    Puh-ko-sun with a long O.

  2. Where is Poquoson, Virginia USA?

Poquoson is near the Atlantic coast, in Southeast Virginia, on the Hampton peninsula across the bay from Norfolk.

  3. What are the sizes of the block sets?

Block size listed is the finished block size.

  4. What is the size of the template?

The size listed is the finished size, i.e. the inner side dimension indicated by the arrow in the illustration.

  5. What is a window template? Bear's Paw Window Style Block Set on fabric

As seen in the image at right, window templates are open in the middle so hand piecers' can draw the sewing line and you are able to pick out designs in the fabric. The outside is the cutting line that can be drawn or cut with a rotary cutter. The template is actually the seam allowance. Most of our current block set products are window templates.

  6. What is a solid template? Bear's Paw Solid Style Block Set on fabric

As seen in the image at right, solid templates are solid pieces cut with seam allowance for machine piecing, or are cut without seam allowance for hand piecing. Several of our Quilting Gadget products are still made in solid style. A remaining block set is Fantastic Fans.

  7. How can I tell which product codes in the catalog are for window templates, and which are for solid templates?

Window template item codes have a W (ATW-6) at the end of the letter code, and the solid template item codes have an S (SPS-6). On solid templates the item code with seam allowance has an A at the very end (SPS-6A).

  8. Can I use a rotary cutter with the templates?

Yes, you can. Look at our Using ARDCO™ Templates Pictorial Demo for more information.

  9. Won't I cut my fingers if I use a rotary cutter with the templates?!?

Anytime you use a rotary cutter you have to be careful. I have cut many pieces and have not cut my fingers. I keep my fingers out of the way. Look at our Using ARDCO™ Templates Pictorial Demo for a demonstration.

  10. How do I hold the window template to use the rotary cutter?

Look at our Using ARDCO™ Templates Pictorial Demo for a demonstration.

  11. Are these templates all miniatures?

No, most of the templates are not miniatures.

  12. Can I get templates for something that is not in the catalog?

Yes. We do special orders. We need to have a drawing of the block and the finished block size. If we already have the pieces in window templates, we can make up sets with them. Otherwise they would have to be solid templates either with or without seam allowance, customer’s choice. Special order window templates are possible, but may require a minimum number of pieces to be ordered.

  13. Are the templates only for hand piecers?

No, one of the advantages of window templates is they are great for machine or hand piecers.

  14. Can I use the templates for paper piecing?

They can be used to make the pieces for English paper piecing.

  15. Are there instructions with the templates?

Some of the sets have directions and some have diagrams. Some don’t have either at this time. We have provided these instructions and other helpful information on our website (for personal, non-commercial use). The best place to find a concise list is on our Product List, and links are also provided from individual product pages. Look for links to Instructions, Suggestions Sheets, Piecing Diagrams, Block Sheets, and Measurement Tips.

  16. Which template do I use for "Tumbling Blocks"?

    The 60-degree diamond.

  17. Which template do I use for "Grandmother’s Flower Garden"?

    The hexagon.

  18. What size hexagon was the standard size used for the "Grandmother’s Flower Garden"?
  19. The 1" (measured on each side - see above).

  20. How do I mark the sewing line one the inside of sharp points such as the "Tea Leaves", "Mariners Compass", and "Winding Ways"?

Look at How to Mark Tight Corners Using ARDCO™ Templates.

  21. What is the advantage of using ARDCO™ templates as opposed to using acrylic or homemade templates?

ARDCO™ templates are the most precise templates available, ensuring accurate piecing from the start. The non-skid backing prevents the template from shifting on the fabric. The window style allows for as much marking of the quarter-inch seam allowance as is desired. The aluminum template will not wear down, nor can it be nicked, so the first block cut will be the same as the last.

  22. Why should "Star Cotton" thread be used for piecing?

The thread is 100% cotton and will not cut the fabric in the future. It is a high quality thread, and is recommended by many prize-winning quilters.

  23. Will the pencil line made on fabric with ARDCO™ pencils wash out?

Yes, as long as you don’t mark too darkly and heat is not applied. Most of the time, the marks are gone by the time the stitching or quilting is done.
